Mateer explores “the way in which
the symbols and myths of our culture influence identity
and self esteem by creating guidelines for definition and
comparison.” Her inspiration comes from traditional
fairy tales where she sees recurring themes of curiosity,
desire, temptation, and innocence lost. Imagery of fruit
and flowers are layered and fragmented to give a dream like
quality to the photographs.
Mateer received her BA in English from The
University of Virginia in 1987 and her MFA in Photography
and Video from The Maryland Institute College of Art in
1996. She has exhibited throughout the northeast and teaches
at Rhode Island School of Design.
